Root Canal
Beaverton, OR

Diagram of tooth showing tooth root at Summercrest Dental in Beaverton, ORHere at Summercrest Dental, we are experts in root canal treatment. The root canal is the cavity at the center of the root of a tooth. It is normally filled up with a pulp that carries veins and nerves. Root canal treatment involves treating and disinfecting infected root canal pulp. The pulp could become infected with bacteria, especially when tooth decay cases go untreated and left to deteriorate.

Root canal treatment becomes necessary when your tooth has been infected deep inside, and even the root canal pulp has been affected. The condition will often cause pain and puts you at risk of losing your tooth. Root canal therapy involves extracting the damaged part of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the tooth, filling the cavity, and sealing it with a crown or cap.

When is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the root canal of the tooth has been damaged or infected. It could be damaged as a result of an injury. Extreme shock or trauma could damage a tooth as far as deep into the root canal.

Root canal injuries are quite rare though. Root canal infection is the most prevalent condition among many people requiring root canal treatment. Often it is as a result of tooth decay that has gone untreated for too long. The bacteria seep into the root canal and start eating the pulp away.

The result can be very painful with severe toothaches and loosened teeth. If also left untreated, you could easily lose the tooth. Our dentists will immediately recommend a root canal treatment when they discover your root canal pulp is infected.

What Can You Expect During a Root Canal Procedure?

As mentioned earlier, the essence of the procedure is to go into the root canal, remove the infected or damaged part, and repair the tooth.

An opening will be created at the top of your tooth using a drill so that the root canal is accessible. The diseased pulp and damaged sections are extracted. An antimicrobial solution is then used to disinfect the tooth and ensure no bacteria are left behind. The tooth is then filled up with a resin material, and the opening closed with a crown.
Root canal treatment is commonly believed to be a very painful procedure. The thought of drills and files make many people afraid of it. Our dentists will administer an anesthetic before any drilling or incision, and you will barely feel any pain. We care about your comfort and general well being. Getting your tooth repaired does not have to be excruciating.

Proper oral hygiene will go a long way in keeping the drills and the files away. An occasional checkup will also ensure any infections creeping up on you are caught before they go far.
