Single Tooth Dental Implant
Beaverton, OR

Beautiful woman smiling after getting dental implants at Summercrest Dental in Beaverton, ORWhen interacting with new people, their smiles are perhaps the first thing we notice. And while some people are blessed with naturally appealing teeth, others require a bit of professional assistance to achieve their dream oral aesthetic. A tooth implant, also known as a dental implant, is a screw-like structure that is surgically embedded into the jawbone with the goal of supporting a dental prosthesis, such as a dental crown, dental bridge, or denture. This procedure is usually done for patients who have a single tooth or multiple teeth absent due to old age, accidents, or decay. The implant itself is typically made of biocompatible materials, such as titanium, and is embedded within the jawbone. This provides a stable foundation for the artificial tooth, allowing for improved functionality and aesthetics. Dental implants are considered a reliable and long-lasting solution for tooth replacement.

What is a Single Tooth Implant?

A single tooth implant, as the name suggests, is a dental implant used to replace a single missing tooth. It involves the placement of a dental implant into the jawbone in the location where the natural tooth is missing. The surgically embedded implant behaves like a natural tooth root and is typically made of a suitable biopolymer. After the implant is surgically placed, a healing period called osseointegration occurs. During this process, the implant fuses with the jawbone, providing a stable foundation. Once osseointegration is complete, an abutment (a connector piece) is attached to the implant, which protrudes through the gum line. Finally, a custom-made dental crown is created to resemble a natural tooth. The crown is attached to the abutment, completing the single tooth implant. The result is a functional and aesthetic replacement tooth that may be prosthetic but looks and functions like a natural tooth.

Other Types of Tooth Implants

Multiple Tooth Implants

While a single implant works for those with a single missing tooth, those with multiple absent teeth need multiple tooth implants. Also known as implant-supported bridges or implant-supported dentures, these are dental prosthetics that are used to replace multiple missing teeth. Just like a single tooth implant, these, too, consist of a titanium structure that is inserted into the jawbone. Multiple implants are usually placed to support a bridge or denture that replaces several missing teeth in a row. With multiple tooth implants, a custom-made bridge or denture is securely attached to the implants, providing stability, functionality, and aesthetics similar to natural teeth. This approach eliminates the need for individual implants for each missing tooth, making it a more efficient and cost-effective solution for restoring multiple teeth.

Mini Dental Implants

A mini dental implant has a smaller diameter and length compared to regular implants. They are typically used in situations where there is limited bone width or height or when there is insufficient bone density for traditional implants. They are often employed in cases where full-sized implants are not feasible due to anatomical constraints or in patients with reduced bone volume. Mini dental implants are designed to provide stability and support for dental prosthetics, allowing patients to enjoy improved chewing ability and aesthetics. However, they may not be suitable for all cases, and the decision to use mini dental implants should be made in consultation with a dental professional who can determine the most appropriate treatment option.
