Types of Dental Implants
Beaverton, OR

A group of smiling older women with dental implants from Summercrest Dental in Beaverton, ORDental implants offer one of the best solutions for those with missing teeth. They provide a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth. With advancements in technology and materials, various types of implants are now available, ranging from single-tooth dental implants to multiple-tooth implants. At Summercrest Dental, we are ready to help you and guide you through the dental implant option.

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants are the most common implant used by those who need teeth replacements. They are made from titanium posts, an abutment, and a crown. The post is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the surrounding tissue over time. The abutment is attached to the post, usually at a later time, and then a crown that looks like your natural teeth is placed on top.

The advantage of this type of dental implant is that it boasts a high success rate and results in natural-looking teeth that feel and function just like your teeth. Secondly, it can be used to replace single or multiple teeth. The care and maintenance of the implant are the same as for your other teeth. Three main types of dental implants are classified under traditional implants. These are:

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of dental implants used today. These types of implants are placed into the jawbone for individuals with healthy jaws. The posts are made of titanium, which provides a sturdy foundation for attaching single crowns, bridges, or even dentures. Endosteal implants can be used for both single and multiple-tooth dental implants.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are an alternative to endosteal implants. These are used when there is no sufficient jawbone for endosteal implants. They are positioned on the jawbone but under the gum tissue. The advantage of such implants is that they are quick to install and less invasive. On the downside, they do not support jawbone health. The subperiosteal implants are commonly used for those who need implants to support dentures.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are used in situations where patients do not have sufficient jaw bone for traditional implants or bone grafting. Instead of anchoring into the jawbone, these implants are drilled into the cheekbone. Also known as the zygomatic bone, it provides a sturdy surface for anchoring teeth.

Other Categories of Dental Implants

While the above three types are the main options for dental implants, some categories do not fall under these three. For instance, while all the above options can be used for single-tooth implants, they can also be used for multiple implants.

All-on-4 and All-on-6 Implants

All-on-4 and All-on-6 implants are tooth solutions designed for patients who need to replace an entire arch of teeth (upper or lower jaw) with a fixed prosthesis. These systems use fewer implants, usually four or six, to support a complete set of teeth. Compared to traditional implants, all-on-4 and all-on-6 require fewer posts.

The benefit of all-on-4 and all-on-6 implants is that patients can often receive temporary teeth on the same day. Further, using fewer implants can lead to shorter treatment times than traditional implants.

Mini Dental Implants

Another type of alternative implant solution is the mini dental implant. Mini dental implants are smaller than traditional ones and are often used for smaller teeth. They may also be used to deal with teeth gaps too large for crowns or for patients with limited bone density. They are ideal for patients who need a quick and easy solution for tooth replacement.

The main advantage of mini dental implants is that they are less invasive than the traditional option. They also offer a faster recovery time and are less costly than conventional implants.

Same-Day Implants

The above tooth replacement options have been implemented over time. Usually, tooth implants are placed over at least six months. The implant process takes time for the prosthetic post to bond with your natural bone. Even so, there is an option known as same-day implant.

Same-day implants are designed for patients who need immediate tooth replacement. The implant is placed during the same appointment as the tooth extraction, allowing for a faster recovery time. To get a same-day implant, you must talk to your dentist in advance and provide crucial information about your oral health. You should also know that not all dentists offer same-day dental implants. First, your dentist should examine your teeth and get recommendations on whether same-day implants are an option.

Zirconia Implants

Zirconia implants are made from ceramic material and are designed for patients with metal allergies or sensitivities. While most prosthetics used in dental implants are non-allergic, some individuals may require zero metallic components. In such a situation, you need to talk to your dentist about the availability of zirconia implants. They offer a more aesthetic appearance and can be used with natural teeth.

Their advantage is that they are purely made from biocompatible materials such as porcelain. They are also natural in appearance, hence ideal for patients with allergies to metallic compounds. On the downside, such implants are more costly than traditional options.

Immediate Load Implants

The standard dental implant procedure requires a patient to take a few weeks of healing after the implant and then return to the dentist for loading. Load means attaching the bitumen, artificial tooth, crown, or denture to the implant. In some instances, patients may be allowed to have the abutment and crown loaded immediately after the implant is put in place.

The advantage of immediate load is that the recovery time is reduced. It also reduces time spent at the dental office as it reduces the number of appointments. On the downside, there may be complications in the healing process if the patient does not manage it properly. Further, it is not commonly offered by implant surgeons.

Various types of dental implants are available, each with its advantages and disadvantages. When considering dental implant options, it is necessary to consult with a qualified dentist to determine the best solution for your individual needs and preferences. Our dentists at Summercrest Dental are well-equipped to deal with the above-mentioned types of dental implant treatments.
